Book Clubs

The lead image for a feature about book clubs in Alta Journal's latest issue, that was used with the tagline - 'My Mother’s Dinnertime Book Club'. The authors first experience of a book club was around his parents dinner table.
The key theme of the article was set in the 80's but I wanted to give it a bit of a 50's dinner-time atmosphere with the mother serving up her favourite topic of conversation around the table - books. The article was used as a general introduction into the 'Books' issue which was focussed more generally on people getting together to read, and talk about books, so the alternative sketches I provided were a bit less specific than this one -
Group sat around a campfire with a book replacing the fire. This idea was meant to suggest the way that stories can light up your imagination.

Bird with wings in the shape of a book. This was meant as a much more general introduction into the book theme, showing the sense of release, or freedom that comes from reading.

The job was art directed by John Goecke for Alta Journal and the full story can be found here - https://www.altaonline.com/books/a70452385/john-freeman-mothers-book-club/
